If you're talking about $12,000, I would recommend starting with the Canon 5 dmark 2 for MSRP $2600, and spending the remaining budget on an extended battery grip, several CF Memory cards, and then begin exploring the world of Canon EF lenses.
I would definitely recommend the 24-70 2.8 for portrait shooting, and the 70-200 2.8 for shooting sporting events or outdoor wildlife.
You'll still have lots left over, to spend on lenses specific to your interests.

My criteria for the 5d is as follows - Full frame image sensor, 1080p video capability, 20megapixels, Canon Professional User Interface, Magnesium body...and of course It's got the Canon name. Which is arguably one of the best names in photography (With Nikon Right beside)

As for the lenses, they are top quality lenses, with fantastic consumer reviews throughout the past 8 years.

That's about, what, $260US?
Canon PowerShot SD940IS is about the best of the bunch and comes in with a rupee to spare - providing you can get them for a reasonable price wherever you are in India.

Failing that, the SD780IS is probably the next best.

Main spec for selecting a compact camera is image quality. I cannot fault Canon's compact cameras and I believe they're the best in the genre. I'd also look at the Optical Zoom and the 940 mentioned has 4x zoom compared to the 780's 3x zoom, so I'd hold out for the 940.

It can also shoot video to a good standard.

I know you're not spending $12,000 for a camera; or you wouldn't be asking what to buy. I suggest the Canon SD1200 IS (IXUS95 IS). Very good image quality.
For lots of zoom on the cheap and also very good image quality would be Fuji S1500.
