Is the Canon 70-200 f/4L USM a good general purpose lens?

I've read from [URL Truncated] that it's great for portraits and I will be shooting portraits a lot, but is it a good lens to walk around with as well?
For that range, it seems like it wouldn't be suitable for landscapes and architecture. But besides those two types of photography, would it be okay for general use?.

And if it's not a general use lens, there's no need to recommend another lens. Just stick to the question and I can handle looking for another lens.
Thanks in advance!

You'd find it a bit large, size wise, and conspicuous, for a walk around. It's fine for landscapes, and architecture, but at a distance.

The best "general purpose lens" is the EF-S 18-200 mm IS. It WILL allow you to shoot landscape and architecture as well as field sports.

Otherwise you will have to be sure to carry your 18-55 mm and 70-200 f/4 with you, something I think you are trying to avoid
